When Identity Becomes Your Reality
🌿 New to A Heart Fully Alive? I encourage you to begin with Episode 1. This season is one continuous journey of healing, and each episode builds on the one before it.
Over the past two episodes, we've discovered that every wound has a voice—and that Jesus has a voice too.
But what happens after we begin recognizing the Shepherd's voice?
How do we actually begin living from what He says?
Maybe you've experienced this...
You know God loves you.
You believe His Word.
You genuinely want to follow Jesus.
And yet, when life becomes difficult, the old fears, old reactions, and old patterns seem to return.
Does that mean you're failing?
Or could it mean you're learning a new way of living?
In this episode, Kris Rey explores the difference between knowing truth, believing truth, and living from truth—and why lasting transformation doesn't begin with trying harder, but with learning to live from the identity Christ has already given us.
You'll discover how painful experiences shape our beliefs, how those beliefs influence our identity, and how Jesus patiently renews our minds so that our everyday lives begin reflecting His truth instead of our wounds.
Because healing isn't simply about feeling better.
It's about learning to live from the truth of who you are in Christ.
In this episode, you'll discover:
- The difference between knowing truth, believing truth, and living from truth.
- How old wounds quietly shape our reactions and relationships.
- Why behavior changes when identity changes.
- What it means to renew your mind according to Romans 12:2.
- Two life-changing questions that can help you recognize whose voice you're agreeing with:
- Who told me that?
- Does Jesus agree?
This Week's Invitation
For the next seven days, simply begin noticing.
When fear, shame, anxiety, or rejection begins speaking...
Pause and ask:
Who told me that?
Then ask:
Does Jesus agree?
Transformation doesn't happen overnight.
It happens one conversation with Jesus at a time.

Welcome back to the Wholehearted Woman Podcast. I'm Chris Ray, and this is your heart room, a place where your story is safe, where healing isn't a failure of faith, and where together we discover what it means to live with a heart fully alive in Christ. Over the last two episodes, we've been on an incredible journey together. We discovered that every wound has a voice. We learned that painful experiences often leave messages behind. Messages about who we are, whether we're enough, whether we're loved, whether we're safe. But then we discovered something even more beautiful. The wound doesn't get the final word. Jesus has a voice too. And last week we talked about learning to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd. But today, I want to answer a question that naturally follows. How do we actually begin living from what Jesus says? Because hearing his voice changes everything. But learning to live from what he says, now that's where transformation begins. Let's get started. Maybe you've experienced this. You spend time with Jesus, you read your Bible, you listen to a podcast, you leave encouraged. Then Monday morning comes, someone criticizes you, someone disappoints you, your plans fall apart, fear shows up, anxiety returns, and you find you're reacting the same way you've reacted for years. And suddenly you're wondering, what's wrong with me? If I know God loves me, why am I still struggling? Friend, can I encourage you today? You're probably not failing. You're learning a new way of living. There is a difference between knowing truth, believing truth, and living from truth. Most of us have been taught the first, knowing truth. Many of us are growing in the second, believing truth. But living from truth, that's the lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus. Think about this for a moment with me. I can know God forgives me. I can quote Scripture, I can tell other people about His grace. But every time I make a mistake, I punish myself, I hide, I feel disqualified, I pull away from God. If that's true, what am I actually living from? Forgiveness or shame? See the difference? Knowledge alone doesn't always become the place where we live from. But transformation happens when truth begins shaping the way we think, respond, choose, and relate to others. That's why I love Romans 12, too. It says, Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Notice what Paul doesn't say. He doesn't say try harder. He doesn't say become someone else. He says, be transformed. Transformation is God's work in us as we continually agree with his truth. And let's go a little deeper. Our experiences shape what we believe. Our beliefs begin shaping how we see others, and eventually, those beliefs become the place we live from. A little girl experiences rejection. She begins believing I'm not enough. Over time, that belief becomes part of her identity. Now every relationship, every decision, every emotion, every reaction flows from what she believes to be true. She's not trying to live from fear. She is simply living consistently with who she believes she is. And many of us have done exactly the same thing. Not because we're weak, not because we don't love Jesus, but because those old messages become familiar. Here's the beautiful part of the gospel. Jesus doesn't begin by correcting behavior. He begins by revealing himself. He reveals his love, his truth, his mercy, his heart. And we encounter him. Our beliefs begin changing. As our beliefs change, our identity becomes anchored in Christ. Our lives begin changing. Behavior changes because identity changes. Identity changes because belief changes. Belief changes because we've encountered Jesus. That's why Christianity is first and foremost a relationship. It's not a self-improvement program. Imagine your heart is a house. For years, fear lived there. Fear decorated every room. Fear answered every knock at the door. Fear made the decisions. Then one day, Jesus comes. He purchases the house. Ownership changes immediately. You belong to him. But the renovation takes time. Room by room, he begins restoring what has been broken, cleaning out old lies, opening windows, bringing light into places that have been dark for years. You don't become his little by little. You become his the moment you trust him. But learning to live in the renovated house, that's the journey. That's the sanctification. And I think one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is, who am I agreeing with today? Every day we're agreeing with someone. The old wound, the world, fear, our past, the enemy, or Jesus. That's why two questions have become so important in my own life. The first one is, who told me that? And does Jesus agree? Those questions have changed the way I think because not every thought deserves my agreement. Not every feeling tells the truth. Not every message I've believed came from God. Learning to recognize that difference is part of renewing our minds. So what does it actually look like to live from truth? It doesn't mean you'll never feel anxious again. It doesn't mean old patterns will never return. It means those patterns no longer get to define me. Maybe fear still knocks on the door, but it doesn't own the house anymore. Maybe shame whispers, but shame doesn't get to tell me who I am. Maybe rejection hurts, but it no longer determines my worth. Your decisions, your reactions, your emotions, your relationships will increasingly begin reflecting what you truly believe about God and about yourself in Christ. That's transformation. And it's not perfection, it's transformation. So I'd like to invite you to practice one simple thing this week. For the next seven days, don't try to fix yourself. Don't put pressure on yourself to change overnight. Just simply begin noticing when fear appears. Ask, who told me that? When shame shows up, ask, does Jesus agree with this? When you're tempted to believe you're not enough, pause. Open God's word. Listen for the shepherd's voice. That's one small step. That's one conversation with Jesus at a time. So I'd like to close in prayer. Father, thank you that you never leave us where you found us. Thank you that you don't simply tell us to change, you transform us from the inside out. Teach us to recognize the voices we've been agreeing with. Help us bring every thought into the light of your truth. Renew our minds, heal our hearts, and teach us to live from the identity you've already given us through Jesus Christ. May our decisions, our relationships, and our everyday lives increasingly reflect the truth that we are deeply loved, completely forgiven, and securely yours. In Jesus' name, Amen. Friend, healing doesn't happen because we hear one podcast. It happens as we continue walking with Jesus one step at a time.
